Social Media Personalization – SlideShare

Ah SlideShare. The social media network where you can upload your presentations and share them with your social media networks. It’s not a network that you would think would have advanced social media personalization.

But did you know that SlideShare was acquired by LinkedIn in May of 2012? And if you’ve read my previous post about LinkedIn personalization, then you know that one of their engineers used to work in the elite 8200 unit (the Israeli equivalent of the NSA). The acquisition has certainly allowed for SlideShare to personalize your “news feed” content AND provide data to LinkedIn that further personalizes your experience there.

Don’t believe me? Check out a screenshot I took from my account settings:

And here’s the language from their modified terms of service that they sent to all users:

This means your SlideShare experience can be personalized based on your LinkedIn profile, your network, and your engagement with content from both services.

There is also a good chance that if you’re active on LinkedIn, you received an email asking you to synch your account which impacts what you see on LinkedIn by:

  • Being able to see what your LinkedIn connections are sharing on SlideShare
  • Find new connections via shared content interests

How does this impact marketers?

If you’re running campaigns for clients on both LinkedIn and Slideshare, make sure that you add new followers on both platforms to take advantage of the data sharing model they have in place. And if you’re using a Google account, make sure that’s the account that you’ve used to set up both LinkedIn and SlideShare for your client as LinkedIn will pull your gmail activity to personalize the LinkedIn experience for those in your mail account.

And keep in mind that being active on SlideShare will now ping your followers every time you “like” or save presentations.Additionally, you’d want to make sure that the presentations that you upload to SlideShare are high quality as interactions with your presentations will (or are) impacting how and who is finding you on LinkedIn.
